Sweeney asks if the man is a rapist or murderer, but the man only laughs and offers him some cranberries. Later, Mad Sweeney walks along the road and a man pulls up beside him and offers him a ride all the way to Wisconsin. She puts the barrel to his forehead and he says not to push her luck because the gun will end up hurting her. Wednesday sees that Shadow is up and announces that they’re going to rob a bank.Ī woman with a shotgun goes into the bathroom to find Mad Sweeney passed out on the toilet. When Shadow wakes up the following morning, he finds the moon coin in his pocket. Shadow teases Czernobog about playing the same game over and over again, and he eventually beats Czernobog, who agrees to go to Wisconsin with Wednesday, but then he’s going to kill Shadow. She says she can taste him in the rain and asks what the taste is. “What have you done?” she demands when they’re through. He kisses her to remind her of their youth.
He continues to praise her beauty, and she tells him that “they” will kill him. He wants to go for a walk, and he teases her for wanting to avoid the rain. Wednesday isn’t fazed a bit rather he continues to brush her hair and says that it’s his fortune for that particular day. She takes one look at the coffee grinds and says that he will fail in this endeavor. Wednesday brushes Zorya’s hair, and she talks about what life was life in the Old Country when she opened the door for her father at dusk every day. The chess game begins and Czernobog makes the first move. He promises that things will be better soon enough. She came from having a court with people who adored her. Wednesday visits Zorya V and flirts with her, telling her that she deserves a much better life. Of course this makes Czernobog furious and he is determined to prove Shadow wrong, so he agrees. He riles him up by saying that he doesn’t think Czernobog can swing the hammer once and get a clean shot. Shadow goes into Czernobog’s bedroom and challenges him to another game. Zorya says she has never been kissed before so she kisses him, decides it’s gross but nice, and then she plucks the moon from the sky and gives it to him as a form of protection. She sees that he sold his head to Czernobog and says he shouldn’t give anything away anymore. She sees that he has nothing because he doesn’t believe in anything, but he’s about to have a lot more. She wants to know about Shadow but he doesn’t want his fortune told. She says that this is her time and wonders about Shadow’s time. She shows him the stars and tells him the story of the constellations and how the three sisters have to guard the sky so that the beast doesn’t escape.

The other Zorya sister, Zorya P, is awake and is looking at the sky with a series of telescopes. He goes outside to find the clouds parted. Shadow wakes up on the couch at Czernobog’s house and sees the hammer on the mantle. She stands at the threshold, uncertain because if she follows the wrong god she will never see her family again. He explains that the doors all go to the same place, but in difference places. She hurriedly tells him her sins, but the scale evens out and she is selected to go into the afterlife. Anubis reveals a scale and plucks her heart from her chest and places it on the scales against the weight of the feather. She’s happy to be appreciated.Īnubis leads her up a long flight of stairs to another plane. She offers him a taste of her cooking, and he says it’s perfect. He’s there because she grew up in Egypt and even though she’s Muslim, he’s there for her. She sees her body on the ground and laments that his is how her family will find her, but Anubis tells her that they will move on eventually, name babies for her and live happy lives. She’d fallen from her stool while grabbing ingredients for her food. She thinks he might want to rob her, but he says that he’s there for her because she died. She tells him the black family lives upstairs, and he says he’s in the right place. There’s a knock on the door and it’s a black man.
